‘The past is a foreign country;
they do things differently there’
LP Hartley, The Go-Between
Our Mission
History is everything. Politics is everything. So when people say that they find history boring or they ‘don’t do’ politics; we know they haven’t found their history or perhaps don’t understand what politics actually is. Past Explorers will in the first instance be a resource for students of these two humanities subjects, but it should also be a source of inspiration for people of all ages to dive in and explore fascinating new topics. No gatekeeping, no entry requirements. We love history and we want to share that with you because people are fascinating.
And history and politics?
They’re about people.
Our History
A long gestating project. Nerves, resources, time and other excuses delayed it from its original launch in 2019. Tuition services under the company name began in September 2021, with the website launching a year later in September 2023. Other grand projects under the Past Explorers banner – podcasts, videos, weekly images, history inspired board games and merchandise are all intended to roll out step by step over the coming months and year, all while we still hold down day jobs in education.
Our Funding
Past Explorers is not a charity. It is a passion project, a labour of love, but it most certainly operates in the real world of pounds and pence and shillings and pesetas. Maybe not those last two any more. We fund the site and all resources through private tuition, advertisements (which you can block, conscience clear), affiliate revenue and generous contributions by people like you who have enjoyed our work and want to support us with a ‘tip’ to ‘Keep Making History‘.
In the future we will consider tiered rewards and will be selling more resources directly through the site, but our bread and butter written content will always be free to access.
